Today, in this article, we'll be taking an extensive look at a very critical and popular ailment that affects more than 85% of men and women in the world today. "STRESS". Stress as you know is a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or demanding circumstances.





Stress is common among adults in our society today and most of them go through this everyday of their lives which can lead to death. Your brain and your heart suffers a lot when you're stressed up. There are different ways in which stress can be managed, some of them require our time, some of them require our money, and so on. But before we get to how to manage them, let's take a quick look at what causes them. Some causes of stress are stated below;

a) Overworking yourself e.g. working for a long period of time or having a workload that is more than you can carry.

b) Not being happy either in your workplace or at a social gathering or even at home.

c) Having to bear too much responsibility either at home or anywhere you find yourself.

d) Giving a speech or short talk in front of a crowd.

e) When you are harassed or discriminated at work, home or by an unprofessional person (e.g petty thief)

Now that we all know some of the major causes of stress, we can now proceed to learn the steps to manage it, so that in future if you're stressed up, you can easily identify the causes and know the preventive measure of managerial step that you are going to use to defeat/conquer it.

Please don't get me wrong, youths and teeenagers also go through stress, either in career development, academic performances, career pursuit and so on.

Some examples of stress individuals either adults, youths or teenagers go through;

Career stress
• Death of a loved one
• Academic stress
• Major life changes e.g marriage
• Illness or injury
• More financial obligations
• Unexpected traumatic events like rape, theft, natural disasters, violence or harrassment against either you or your loved ones.

When an individual is stressed up, it has certain effects on his body and health. Some of them are;

1) Regular Exercise:

Exercise is an important key and factor to manage amd combat stress. It helps our body fight against stress more than we know it. Our bodies respond positively when we exercise.




Exercise helps to lower your body stress hormones to the minimal. It also releases some body chemicals that acts as natural body pain killers and these chemicals also helps to improve the mood of an individual.

As lack of sleep is one of the effects of stress, exercise improves your sleep quality and habit. Researchers have found out that people who partake in exercises more often are less stressed.

2) Eat Healthy:

Eating healthy and well nourished food is one of the ways to manage stress. Always make sure that your breakfast is healthy so as to keep your mind clear and keep your energy up for that day. Balanced nutritious meals should be taken at least once in a day to keep your body fit and ready to combat stress. 

Also, sugary foods (soft drinks, sugary snacks, etc) and caffeine are not good for a person undergoig stress. To prevent stress, we should try everything possible to see that we avoid caffeine and sugar as this temporarily crashes our mood and energy thereby resulting in stress. Reduction of sugar in whatever we take helps us sleep better and feel relaxed in turn reducing and managing our stress level.

3) Saying 'NO' to tasks that would result to stress in the future:


Always remember that you are in control. Never let anyone impose tasks, duties, etc. on you knowing that those tasks are strenuous and would later result in stress. Say 'NO' to those things that you know would not be of benefit in the nearest future.


4) Family and Friends:


Being part of a good and loving family really helps to get a lot of people through stressful times.

Spending quality time with your family most times releases oxytocin, a natural stress reliever. Women over the years have formed the habit of spending time with her children or friends which helps to release natural stress reliever into the body.

Having friends on the other hand gives you a sense of self-worth and belonging which can help you through stress.

Study has shown that people with less friends and fewer social connections are more likely to suffer from stress, depression and anxiety.

Keeping good friends and having a strong social tie may help you through stressful times and help you fight anxiety.
